The International Chamber of Commerce have developed a business charter for sustainable development. This effort has the support of many companies and intended to identify areas for successful continuos improvement. The charter promotes environmental policy areas as :-
Environmental Management should become one of the highest priorities for all corporations demonstrated by the creation of policies, programmes, procedures and practices for achieving environmentally sound operations for the company. The executive has authority for directing the company and therefore is the route of all future changes in that direction.
The full integration of environmental elements into the normal business operation of the company, is essential to ensure that the management system functions as a coherent entity. This integrated approach is further demonstrated by amalgamation of the management systems for environment, quality, customer satisfaction, health and safety of staff.
The Process of Improvement
To use the company organisation, customer expectations, community expectations, legal regulations, development of tools and new techniques in order to continually improve the environmental performance of the organisation.
Staff Education and Training
To provide awareness ability and motivation to employees in order to conduct their activities in an environmentally responsible manner.
To evaluate the potential environmental impacts of the companys business before embarking on new projects, products or activities, and to consider these effects when ceasing production or closing facilities.
Products and Services
To consider the life cycle of products and services to ensure that they have no undue environmental impact and are fit for their intended use, are efficient in their consumption of resources, can be re-cycled, re-used and disposed of safely.
Facilities and Operations
This is primarily the same considerations as products and services but related to the facilities and premises operated by the company, when looking at facilities perhaps a stronger emphasis can be placed on the promotion of renewable resources, minimisation of pollution and generation of waste and a safe and responsible husbandry of the land resource.
Contractors and Suppliers
These are an extension, but integrated, part of the companys operations and products. The organisation can encourage contractors and suppliers to also adopt sound environmental principles combined with a system of continuos improvement ensuring that the suppliers become consistent with the aims of the organisation itself. this also encourages the wider adoption of environmental improvement practices within suppliers and sub-contractors.
Openness to Concerns
To foster an open exchange of information and communication between the organisation and its stake holders, employees, suppliers, society, the public, stockholders.
Compliance and Reporting
This is the measurement of environmental performance. Following definition of the companys environmental aspects and impacts, measurements can be performed to demonstrate stability or improvement and confirming compliance with company objectives and legal requirements. This information can also be used to periodically provide information to the stake holders.
